The Quintet
In 2017, Reading based Trinity Concert Band and Woodley Concert Band both needed a small group to undertake some engagements. Five brass players came together, most of whom played in both bands and rather liked the sound they made. They enjoyed playing together and so decided to form a new quintet. A standard brass quintet includes a French horn but the five that volunteered comprised two trumpets, two trombones and a tuba and they found that worked very well. As everyone in the quintet was playing a brass instrument beginning with T, they decided to call themselves 5Ts Brass.
Two members of the ensemble were professional musicians with the army and the other three are experienced amateurs. All the members are retired or semi-retired which allows concerts to be given during the day as well as evenings. Each member of our quintet has a wealth of experience playing in bands and orchestras.
The members of the band are John Sayer - Trumpet, Alison Croxton – Trumpet, Stephen Kerry – Alto Trombone, Dave Robson – Tenor Trombone and Len Tyler – Tuba. Len is also the resident composer for the group and has so far composed or arranged more than 80 pieces for the group.
